Protractors

Homework:

-do this quiz "Grade 4: Using a Protractor" 
-copy the questions and your answers into your notebook

2.) Reading
-write a reading response/letter to Ms. Mok about the new book you are reading

Highlights:

*We reviewed how to measure angles using a protractor. 
*We practiced writing proper paragraphs. 
*We discussed different mechanical systems (simple machines). 
*We exchanged and took out books from the school library.

Importance of Education

Homework:

1.) Journal
-choose one of the journal topics from the list, or write about the jazz band, or the video we watched this morning  "Shannen's Dream"
-2 pages double-sided single-spaced, or 4 pages double-sided double-spaced

Highlights:

*We watched a powerful video about the importance of education and the opportunities we have living in the city.
*We saw the UCC Jazz Band perform.
*We celebrated Earth Hour at school by turning off all the hallway and classroom lights!

***Don't forget to celebrate with the rest of the world tomorrow (Saturday) from 8:30-9:30pm! ***

Puberty

Homework:

1.) Math
-reflect on the mistakes you made on the geometry quiz:
-"What do you need to improve on? How did your study habits help you do well? Explain"
-1 paragraph

2.) Book Report
-due tomorrow

Highlights:

*We had a lesson on puberty with Mr. Alpie and Ms. Maria today. Take another look at the videos we saw Puberty for Boys and Puberty for Girls Remember to visit kidshealth.org for more detailed information. 
*We discussed ways to improve our persuasive writing by giving descriptive feedback to our peers' work as a class. 
*We played King's Court (dodgeball) in gym which was a lot of fun!

Gym Workshop

Highlights:

*We had our bridge challenge in the morning. The winners are to be decided tomorrow! 
*We had our math quiz in the morning.
*We went to a gym workshop in the afternoon while the teachers had their own workshop.

Math Quiz tomorrow

Homework:

1.) Reflection
-on lined paper: "Tell us how you felt about the (DeRozan) book program?" and "Tell us what you would change for future programs?" 
-one paragraph each/5-6 sentences

2.) Read "Harriet the Spy"
-up to at least pg. 179 (Chapter 10)

3.) Math
-quiz tomorrow! see the success criteria below...

Success Criteria for Geometry Unit 
*describe 2D shapes/polygons (sides, angles, vertices)
*describe and name angles in 2D shapes (smaller than 90 degrees= acute, 90 degrees= right, bigger than 90 degrees=obtuse)
*describe 3D shapes using words such as straight line= edge, corners= vertices, surfaces= faces (to create nets)

Highlights:

*We discussed what will be on the quiz tomorrow. 
*We played a game to practice describing different shapes. 
*We shared our most memorable books of the DeRozan program.
*We play badminton again in gym and had a great time!

3D Shapes

Homework:

1.) Math
-complete both sides of worksheet 
-find objects around your home (not in the classroom as it says on the sheet) 
-due tomorrow
-QUIZ on WEDNESDAY (2D shapes and attributes, types of angles, parts of 3D shapes)

2.) Read "Harriet the Spy" 
-up to at least pg. 132 for tomorrow

3.) Reflection
-on the lined piece of paper: "Which book(s) was the most memorable? Explain why."
-one-side/single-spaced or two-sided/double-spaced (on the lined paper given)
-due tomorrow
-**we will have to write TWO book reports this week, one for "Harriet the Spy" and another outlining our feelings about the program**

Highlights:

*We made a manipulative (in our notebook) that will help us remember parts of 3D shapes (edge, face, vertex).
*We made our finishing touches to our bridges and tested them before the competition tomorrow. 
*We watched some of the Bill Nye Science Guy video on Structures

2.) Read the new book "Harriet the Spy"
-read at least to page 106 (chp. 6)
-be prepared to write a response about all the other books we have read over the past 10 weeks for the program

Highlights:

*We introduced our unit on puberty in Health today. You were all very mature during our discussions! If you have any questions you can either ask me, or the nurses, or visit kidshealth.org for more information.
*We researched to draft and build our straw bridges which will be tested on Monday!

Nutrition

Homework:

-go onto Blended Learning: NEW PASSWORD is now your TDSB PASSWORD
-under the "Geometry" post, click on the "Types of Angles" unit
-watch the videos and take jot-notes, activity sheet will be handed out tomorrow to complete
-due on MON

2.) Book Report
-"Liar and Spy" reading response/book report is due TOMORROW

3.) Journal
-reflect on what you ate today, did you have a balanced diet? Did you eat the right amount of serving sizes for each food group? (Fruits/Vegetables=6 servings, Grains=6 servings, Diary=3 to 4 servings, Meat and Alternatives=1 to 2 servings)
-it should be at least one page/single-spaced

*We discussed serving sizes and how to balance our diet in Health.
*We continued working on our Earth Hour posters today.
*We learned more about forces acting on structures.

Bridge Challenge

Homework:

1.) Math
-in your notebook, draw a picture that includes as many different types of angles (acute, right, obtuse) just like the city line drawing we made earlier today 

2.) Read "Liar and Spy"
-read up to at least pg. 104 
-finish the response you have written from earlier today (it should be at least one page/single-lined)

Highlights:

*We drew posters to promote Earth Hour integrating our review of types of angles into our artwork. 
*We discussed and practiced writing reading responses that included level 4 critical thinking insights about the story, characters, and the author's intent. 
*We introduced the concept of forces acting on structures (pull, push, twist) as well as our bridge challenge which we will begin tomorrow!

Badminton

-for both questions, ONLY estimate and name the type of angle it is (acute, right, obtuse)
-you do not need to measure the angle

2.) Read "Liar and Spy"
-read to at least pg. 55 
-write at lease one question on a post-it note using the sentence stems given today 
-ex. "What is the author's intent?"

Highlights:

*We reviewed types of angles (acute, right, obtuse) by exploring shapes/objects in our classroom.
*We reviewed the success criteria about how to write a good reading response. 
*We shared our science posters about bicycle and car use. 
*We played badminton in gym.
*We had music in the afternoon.

*We played a back-to-school game to retell what we did over the March break.
*We reflected on the resolutions we made at the beginning of the year. 
*We made final touches on our group project about climate change, bike use and car/truck use in the city. 
*We discussed various spy movies we have seen to introduce the new book of the week. 
*We went to the library to exchange books.

Yes!! It is a holiday, BUT you are expected to find some time to complete the following assignments!

March Break Homework:

-due on Mon. March 17th

2.) Read
-finish the new book for the week "Noah..."
-book report is due on Mon. March 17th 

3.) Book Report
-if you have not already done so, book report for "Hoot" is due on Mon. March 17th 

4.) Health
-in your journal, record ONE day of meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks)
-look at the SUGAR or SODIUM content on the Nutrition Facts chart on the packaging 
-due on Mon. March 17th 

5.) Math
-be prepared for a test on Polygons and Quadrilaterals when we return from March Break
-visit our Blended Learning site to practice questions and watch videos 

Highlights:

*We learned how to read and interpret the nutrition facts on various products. 
*We discussed the consequences of eating more than the daily recommendations of sugar, sodium and fat such as, clogged veins, diabetes, and kidney failure. 
*We watched the movie "Hoot" and compared it to the book we've been reading all week.

Last Day of School before the Break tomorrow!

Homework:

1.) Read "Hoot"
-retell the story if you have finished reading the book/or up to at least chapter 11
-we will be watching the movie and write a comparison to the book tomorrow for the book report

2.) Science
-prepare your materials for the poster: such as get a bristol board, print out pictures, research information to write on your poster

3.) Heath
-if you have not already done so, bring in TWO food products to compare (it should be the same kind of product ie. drinks, chips, cookies, cereal)

4.) Uniform
-orders are due tomorrow

Highlights:

*We were filmed by First Book Canada and interviewed by Mr. Best discussing our feelings about the Book Program so far. It was an exciting experience to be on camera!
*We were introduced to our science assignment for the March Break today and spent some time on the iPads with our partners doing research.
*We played multi-sports including gymnastics in gym today.
