Happy Summer!

It has been a memorable and exciting year, grade 5s!! We have done so much and learned so much. I wish that I could continue to see your growth but unfortunately I will not be returning to Lord Dufferin in September. I have been moved to a new school to teach Grade 3/4 at Gateway PS. I hope for the best for each and every one of you next year in Grade 6! It's been a wonderful year together- have a fun and safe summer!! I will miss you! 

As promised, here is a summer reading list of books I recommend and have enjoyed reading myself! My top 5:

Book Fair on Wednesday

Homework

1.) Poetry
-write good copy of the Perseverance Poem Contest 
-follow the instructions, correct spelling, and lots of colour on the good copy
-due tomorrow

2.) Media
-complete the "Ad Analysis" log on the sheet given
-due on Wednesday

3.) Math
-in your notebook:
-represent this fraction in at least 3 different ways (in pictures, numbers and/or words)
- 3 5/8 (3 wholes and 5 eighths)

4.) Book Fair
-we will be visiting the book fair set up in the library on Wednesday
-bring $5-10 if you wish to buy something 

5.) Literacy Fair
-after school from 4:30-7 there will be literacy booths and a BBQ set up for families who wish to learn more about literacy fun at home 

Highlights

*We worked more with fractions using colour tiles. 
*We learned about a new form of poetry, called "cinquain" and shared our new poems. 
*We discussed various advertising strategies in commercials. 
*We had extended gym/recess and enjoyed the sunshine!

Spring Concert

Homework

1.) Poetry
-practice the poem you will be performing on Friday (you can perform more than one, but everyone will perform at least one either in front of the class on in small groups)
-make a good copy of your favourite poem

2.) Science
-in your journal answer the following:
             i.) How can you observe gasses without seeing them?
             ii.) Give 3 examples of each in detail 

3.) Bring snack donation

Highlights

*We created a success criteria for poetry and peer edited our poems.
*We watched the Spring Concert this morning.
*We discussed changes of state (melting, evaporation, condensation, freezing) in science. 
*We had gym indoors this afternoon.

Poetry Cafe on Friday

Homework

1.) Math
-pg. 263-264 #1-4
-use the paper strips you cut out this morning to help you with the questions
-draw your answers to show the equivalent fractions
-homework will be collected and graded 

2.) Poetry
-write a 3 stanza haiku 
-you can write about: seasons, animals, sports, yourself etc.

3.) Bring snack donation ($2 or more)

Highlights

*We continued with equivalent fractions using paper strips. 
*We learned about haiku form of poetry.
*We had an extended gym period and played soccer baseball. 

*Tomorrow is the Spring Concert! Good luck to all the band members who will be performing!***

-complete the Diamante poem from class, write out a good copy and decorate
-find and copy/print out lyrics of your favourite song (1 or 2 songs) for Thursday

Highlights

*We reviewed equivalent fractions and how to simplify fractions using division patterns. 
*We explored the Diamante form of poetry and read a book about the colour brown called "Tan to Tamarind".
*We discussed the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and their properties.

"I Am" Poetry

Homework

1.) Math
-pg. 260 #1, 2, 3 

2.) Writing
-complete all three stanzas following the guideline for "I Am" poems
-write in the voice of someone wanting to move to Canada
-use correct spelling and write a good copy
-you may wish to decorate the poem and/or type it out on the computer

3.) Snack Donation
-the class is collecting at least $2.00 each student for snacks
-please ask your parents for a donation

Highlights

*We practiced writing "I Am" poems today as a class, incorporating the words we generated as a group last week with the stories we read about people wanting to move to Canada. 
*We started a new unit on Fractions. 
*We had music class in the afternoon.
